Oh I remember one older man who was at a vocations retreat at the FSSP seminary, and he said he would like to join the FSSP and be a military chaplain as he was already in the marines. They said that they thought some of the chaplains were somewhat open to saying the extraordinary form, and that it was a real possibility as there are quite a number of traditional Catholics in the military.

By the very nature of the military, it attracts traditionally minded Catholics. Service, obedience, Duty, honor, etc. all play well with traditional Catholic values and virtues. I’m not CPT Tom for nothing, I was a Captain in the Army once.

Most Catholic Priests (and other clergy as well) tend to be either traditional, or very conservative Priests. One of the best Archbishops of NY was (Admiral) John Cardinal O’Conner who headed the Military Vicarate before becoming Archbishop of NY. The new Archbishop of Baltimore (Archbishop Frederick O’Brien) is also a former Military Vicar. He just recently removed from pastorship a priest for liturgical abuses, only 6 weeks into the job.

I would not be surprised if the TLM gets good “play” in the chapels of the military, where they profoundly have respect for traditions.

I have met a number of traditional minded men in the Armed Forces but most of the military chaplains I’ve run into are far advanced in the ways of false ecumenism. They often have to share an interdenominational chapel and have no qualms about it. A priest once told me that as a Colonel, he had rank over the other chaplains who were once fighting over who was going to do the Sunrise Service on Easter morning. Since none of the protestant chaplains would concede, he did it himself. So I guess anything goes, even perhaps a Traditional Mass.

Good for Archbishop O’Brien. Any details about the removal of a priest for liturgical abuses? I am not intending to gossip–I just really want to know how bad it needs to get for church leadership to actually take serious corective action.

And on another point, I believe O’Brien was the bishop who ordained the guy who died in the great book “A Priest Forever.” The account of his ordination is amazing.
