This august Society is again readying a contingent of its humblest pilgrims in anticipation of the Twelfth Annual Auriesville Pilgrimage for Restoration. Although distinctly alarming absences are rumoured in this year’s Saturday delegation, our company shall be fortified by new souls whose penitential zeal will no doubt set us all aflame with charity.
To all those within several hours travel of Fonda, NY, I invite you to think of joining the pilgrimage on Saturday the 29th of September. There’s no charge and no need to register in advance. Upstate New York is about as beautiful as it can be at this time of year, and there’s Mass, singing, preaching and penance to be had. What’s more, the Pope has freed the traditional Mass, the Mass of All Time, the Mass of the North American Martyrs themselves, and it is our duty to offer Thanksgiving!
For those who are unable to attend, we’ll again be posting pictures and commentary soon after we return. Incidentally, I am planning to make the entire pilgrimage, starting on Wednesday, so I’ll have a tale and pictures from then, as well.
Finally, and the reason for my posting: this is the ideal day to begin a novena to the North American Martyrs, whose feast is the 26th of September, the first day of the pilgrimage. I have included below a novena prayer of internet origin.
Holy Martyrs and patrons,
protect this land which you have blessed
by the shedding of your blood.
Renew in these days our Catholic faith
which you helped to establish in this new land.
Bring all our fellow citizens
to a knowledge and love of the truth.
Make us zealous in the profession of our faith
so that we may continue and perfect the work
which you have begun with so much labour and suffering.
Pray for our homes, our schools,
our missions, for vocations,
for the conversion of sinners,
the return of those who have wandered from the fold,
and the perseverance of all the faithful.
And foster a deeper and increasing unity among all Christians. Amen.
NOVENA PRAYER
O God, who by the preaching and the blood of your blessed Martyrs, John and Isaac and their companions, consecrated the first fruits of the faith in the vast regions of North America, graciously grant that by their intercession the flourishing harvest of Christians may be everywhere and always increased. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OF PETITION
O God, who inflamed the hearts of your blessed Martyrs with an admirable zeal for the salvation of souls, grant me, I beseech you, my petitions and all the requests recommended here today, so that the favours obtained through their intercession may make manifest before men the power and the glory of your name. Amen.
St. John de Brébeuf, pray for us.
St. Isaac Jogues, pray for us.
St. Gabriel Lalemant, pray for us.
St. Anthony Daniel, pray for us.
St. Charles Garnier, pray for us.
St. Noël Chabanel, pray for us.
St. René Goupil, pray for us.
St. John de la Lande, pray for us.
Holy Mary, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us.

To Auriesville!
Best wishes for a holy and inspiring pilgrimage. Wish we at Duke could join you.
I had to smile at the poll in the sidebar. After walking a thousand-odd miles of old pilgrimage routes in Europe, I frankly don’t see the fuss about shorts on pilgrims. If someone’s scandalized by seeing a few inches of grimy sunburned lower leg peeking out between ratty wool socks and dilapidated old cargo shorts, they should get out more often (or practice better custody of the eyes?)
Looking forward to your report.
Andreas, have you seen the shorts they wear on the road to Chartres? It’s not a few inches of grimy, sun-burned lower leg! Au contraire! They appear to be made from leather and end well above the knee.
I always assumed the justification was for Mass-going. If some Novus lackey infiltrated the proceedings and escaped with a picture of us all dressed so at the Holy Sacrifice, we might never get our Jansenist cred back.
We’d lose our street cred with the Jansenists! I love it!
Jansenists??? Aren’t they that extreme leftist group I’ve heard about?!?! *{;-)
Not to be picky… but I’m going to be picky. The first of the prayers above should be in the second person plural, i.e., “protect this land which you have blessed.” “Thou hast blessed” is singular. Thus the priest would always say, “The Lord be with you” and the congregation respond “and with thy spirit.”
Enough grammar.
Would you be kind enough to remember me in your prayers during the pilgrimage as I struggle to learn the Latin and rubrics of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass?
May our Mother of Perpetual Help watch over you on your journey.
Good call, Father, on the grammar.
And you shall certainly be in my prayers.
Thank you. And you in mine.
I was at the Pilgrimage for restoration. Too bad we did not meet. However I noticed your banner, and during the Solmn High Mass at the Shrine, Steve Farynaz, a son of our good friens was holding your banner.
Next year we should make it a point to introduce ourselves. Ihave some pictures of the pilgrimage on my blog at http://www.syriancatholic.blogspot.com
