Usus antiquior training seminar, Endicott, NY

An announcement from Mr. William Mooney:

With Pope Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio *Summorum Pontificum* there are priests who would like to celebrate the *forma extraordinaria* of the Roman Rite, also known as the Tridentine Latin Mass, and there are faithful who would like more opportunities to attend.

We are planning a seminar on the history, theology and spirituality of the Tridentine Mass according to the Roman Missal of 1962 under Blessed Pope John XXIII on August 24-25 (9am-12pm) with a practicum for priests and servers on August 30-31 (9am-12pm).

Any priests or boys/men interesting in learning to serve a Tridentine Mass are welcome to attend. The seminar is free and will be held at:

Mount St Francis Hermitage
120 Edson Rd. (*this is not a mailing address!!!*),
Endicott NY 13760-6439

We are located in the Syracuse Diocese (the Southern Tier), not far from the diocesan borders of Albany, Rochester and Scranton, PA. The seminar, hosted by the Franciscans of the Immaculate, will be run by Fr. Mark Fischer, FSSP (the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter).

As of September 14th, Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Franciscans of the Immaculate will offer the traditional Latin Mass according to the 1962 Missal every Friday evening at 7pm at Mount St. Francis Hermitage.

Ave Maria!

What delightful news! I always liked the friars of Mt. St. Francis. They give wonderful homilies and the priests are great in the confessional. I always wondered how they regarded the Tridentine rite, as they only said the Novus Ordo, albeit in the most reverent and traditional way. However, their founder was a server for Padre Pio, so traditional sympathies should be no surprise.

This is delightful news. I’ve visited their place in Maine, New York just once, though some of my friends at Cornell (they’ve now left) have been several times. I thought it was a thoroughly Novus (though reverent) operation. In fact, I thought that some of them played guitars and the like. Or maybe I was mistaken or maybe that’s only some of them, while others of them are old Mass partisans. I’m rather curious about them.

Anyway, it’s great news for us because they are close to Ithaca, not even as far as Binghamton, in fact.

Some of them sing Marian hymns accompanied by guitar, but not during Mass, as far as I know. I did, at times, fear they were of the Steubenville spirituality, but they usually sang Gregorian chant at the Masses I attended and they ended with Pope Leo’s prayers after a low Mass.

In any case, how exciting for Cornellians. I heard, long ago, the friars started building a new church at the Mount, with design help from the excellent Notre Dame architectural program. I wonder how that project progresses.

Yes, it is exciting for us. We’ll see what we can do to help.

When did they start building? It was a rather small chapel they had when I was last there. But I haven’t been there in well over a year. Probably two years, even.

Oh, and I also wanted to say: they are very good confessors. Or at least the priest who heard my confession was.

Do you know what sort of episcopal patronage they have? Who are their protectors?

Well, this is wonderful! They are affiliated with Air Maria, where their special apostolate is to defend the Church’s full teaching about the Blessed Virgin Mary: Co-Redemption, Mediation of all graces, her role as Advocate, her physical virginity before, *during*, and after Our Lord’s Nativity, etc. Excellent.

I did notice a guitar in one photo on the Air Maria site. Nota bene: if you go to Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, the frescoes on the walls show angels playing what looked to me at the time like guitars. I heard once that St. Teresa of Avila made her nuns dance and play castanets. As long as it’s outside of Mass and sounds good, I don’t see the harm.

I think they started building about two years ago.

Here is a somewhat outdated summary of the order’s history and here is their contact info.

Sorry, that second link leaves something to be desired. Let’s try that again, shall we:

Hmmm…I guess that link isn’t going over well. Last try, the old-fashioned way:

    Nor do I.
