I prefer the second explanation, but perhaps you should be thankful that at least they didn’t cross out the ‘Dei’ (as would surely be appropriate on some campuses).
I picture one of those student/academics with those “modern” (aka goofball-ish) looking glasses on doing this; like maybe a liberal philosophy student or someone similar.
