Give your money to your local, orthodox parish. If desired, give the rest of your charitable money to EWTN. The rest leave up to God.

Hehe.

wow, the Acton Institute...

Anyway, I think any form of alsmgiving should go first to local organizations and to promoting the local community as much as possible.

My husband and I support on a regular basis the Christian organization, Food For The Poor, because it is very effective at relieving poverty. Their website is www.foodforthepoor.org

I do sometimes wonder if it is a problem that they are not Catholic. But then I ask myself, can't we Christians even collaborate in feeding the poor?

They get a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, a directory of ratings reports by charity. www.charitynavigator.org

I agree on your four points of non-donation. Although I don't ever directly donate to something political, I do occasionally donate to causes that educate Catholic voters on things like pro-life issues.

In my opinion, you are totally correct in dividing up your donations between your parish, the poor, and the religious. To me, those are the three most important aspects of contributing to a Catholic community: the parish life, which we partake in at least weekly; the poor, who Christ obliged us to support and even if He hadn't we ought to in Christian charity; and the religious, to support vocations and the spiritual and temporal good they do here on earth. Of course, there are other good places too, such as pro-life causes, but these are the most important, and depending on who you donate to, prolife activities may be included.

Until I hear bad things about them, my two favorite charities for the poor are Catholic Relief Services and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, which I think Pope Pius XI requested to be founded.

Okay, I hope this wasn't too preachy, these were just my opinions. :) I didn't realize how long this would be. Oops!

You have to be careful with some of the orgs caring for the poor. Some of them provide condoms and such as part of this "care".

Clara,

A friend of mine claims that, as a matter of justice, at least 5% of one's tithe ought to go to one's parish, while the other 5% can be given to your favorite charities or causes. I have never investigated the authority of that proportion, but I find it a helpful starting point nontheless.

As to choosing amongst the numberless charities and causes, my inclination is to give to a traditional religious order. It seems wrong to entirely disregard poverty and hungry relief, but I am less certain of how to choose from that category of solicitors. Heifer International was recommended to me as a trustworthy charitable organization, but I worry about donating to non-Catholic programs. I expect it is not problematic unless they follow a specifically anti-Catholic or even anti-Christian philosophy, though the Sisters of Charity may be a safer choice.
