This vicar is exactly the kind of person that is the problem in the french church. Wonderful this church is deeply decaying and slowly dying.

One small correction.

en vigueur jusqu’en 1962 means “in force up until 1962″

Most clergy in France wear lay dress. The higher-ranking ones, i.e. monsignori and prelates tend to wear ties with their suits (if a bishop, wearing their pectoral crosses over their red silk tie and grey suit). Very odd and very French. If you see a priest wearing clerical dress of any description in France, chances are it’s someone who actually believes and holds the Catholic faith, not a given with French clerics (I have met priests who actively suppport abortion or who deny Christ’s divinity).

The French Church has always been quirky; secular clergy used to commonly wear the rabat, two black bands with a white surround, instead of the Roman collar.

I’m sort of alarmed by how much this guy looks like Kevin Kline. He has exactly the same smile.
