So far as I can judge from this picture, the Society for a Good Time does not have cognac expensive enough to toast this guy - the Grand Master of the Order of Malta - if he should ever happen to town. This distinguished, red-coated fellow is, like, the supreme commander of the folks who were tending to the pilgrims’ feet on our way to Chartres? He must have gotten a few looks from the tourists, on account of that fancy get up, on his way to the Apostolic Palace this morning.

Fantastic photograph! He’s actually a Brit too.
Incidentally, as a sovereign entity according to international law, the Order issues passports. The world’s rarest passport is not, as some might commonly think, the Vatican City State’s, but rather the Sovereign Order of Malta’s. Personally, I would love one! http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/smom.html
Ahh, so when did the pope switch back to the summer mozzetta? And does anyone know if Pope Benedict wore the white damask mozzetta during the Octave of Easter?
That’s an awesome fact about the Order of Malta’s passports. I bet the customs officials take a second look at that one.
Francis, I don’t know . . . but the way to know (or, to have know) is to look regularly at the photos on yahoo’s page of the papacy. They’re often repeats, since they’re compiling for reuters, ap, etc., but they’re often really cool shots.
Go to this page and then scroll down.
The Pope wore the “winter’ mozzetta as late as his trip to Poland, perhaps even later.
Here’s a link to a picture of him at the sanctuary of Kalwaria on May 29.
