I am right now listening to Boswell’s Life of Johnson, and I tonight came across the following delightful quotation. I imagine that our readers will enjoy it as well.
I told him I had been that morning at a meeting of the people called Quakers, where I had heard a woman preach. Johnson: “Sir, a woman’s preaching is like a dog’s walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.”
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort,
Pope St. Pius X,
St. Joseph,
St. Ambrose of Milan,
St. Thomas Aquinas,
St. Francis (and St. Clare),
St. Catherine of Siena,
St. Alphonsus Ligouri,
St. John Chrysostom,
Rich!
Actually they just aren’t permitted to preach from the pulpit because the priest has the charism of preaching in persona christi.
In the rest of life you women speak up loud and clear on the faith and your experiences!
John Boy . . . you are the silliest boy I know. : )
Johnboy,
I wanna puke.
You’re so PC.
Do I need to sing another chorus of I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR?
Johnboy sounds like a cheerleader at a Call to Action meeting:
“Women speak up loud and clear on the faith and your *experiences*”
The dog analogy works well on many levels.
Johnboy, I bet you’re a big fan of the multi-gender footwashing at most Holy Thursday masses nowadays?
Surely it’s multi-sex. Why does everyone use this word “gender”?
Actually the theory of the famous Vatican Council II was to redirect from the earthly “Clericalism” instilled in past generations of Catholics. St. Josemaria Escriba was the founder of Opus Dei that sort of instills in the Church the concept of holiness beyond just monks, nuns, and priests. He was labeled a heretic by some back before Vatican II when folks were actually misinformed.
Likewise, the Second Vatican Council pretty much wanted to allow others to take part in the spreading of the Gospel to the world; not to restrict preaching to men. In any case this sort of preaching issue is only a matter of preaching from the pulpit during the homily.
I do not like Call to Action. I just follow the Church. Do u?
I like that Johnnette Bencovik (spelling?) preaching from the pulpit outside of mass.
She’s impressive.
“Spread the Gospel”
Fine.
Do it in your workplace.
Do it in your family.
Do it in your neighborhood.
Not in the Church.
Not from the pulpit.
Not anytime.
Holiness has nothing to do with your status within the Church.
Johnette Bencovitc is not anymore or less holy because she “preaches” than an illiterate, housewife in Guatemala.
In fact the housewife in Guatemala is probably holier.
Save your Vatican II spin for someone who cares.
The fruits of Vatican II speak louder than your incessant spin, spin, spin.
Where’s the beef? Where’s the holiness?
In fact these “active” laypersons are confused on many matters of Catholic faith and morals. They are in essense the blind leading the blind.
For Johnboy:

Oh yes, Joe Six Pack, your question/remark about multi-gender footwashing…
I believe the Church does not permit it. Therefore, I think it’s wrong.
As a woman professor who loves to “preach” to students — who loves to spread the gospel and the truths of Holy Mother Church — and who considers herself fairly open-minded, I can tell you my own personal feeling on the matter. Women who want to stand up in a CHURCH and preach — give me the heebie jeebies! As far as that goes, women (and men) who want to be extraordinary (which they aren’t) ministers in the improper manner of today make my skin crawl. It’s disordered!
An antiphon from the monastic ferial office comes to mind: “Et omnis mansuetudinis ejus.”
Like a dog on his hind legs?
try
Like a dog on her hind legs.
I’ve heard enough countless pseudo homilies given by many women wanna be priests in the Diocese of Rochester in past years to know that the title of this blog post is VERY appropriate.
I am woman HEAR ME roar.
I can’t agree any more that women preaching the homily at Mass is so stupid as to undermine the priesthood and trivialize the fact that the priest preaches during the homily in persona Christi.
