When Archbishop Wasteland, er Weakland (is that any better?) of Milwaukee went out in his rainbow blaze of glory, my onetime parish priest said that Doran was the definite choice. Perhaps he was held back for a bigger see. Just as Bishop Burke in La Crosse had curial credentials in the Segnatura, Bishop Doran was in the Roman Rota. Then again, maybe I'm just feeding the gossip mill myself . . . the man confirmed me, so I'm not objective. Maybe Bishop Doran from my home diocese, Rockford, IL, is in line as well.
