Isn't that also something of the romanitas way? You can't just send off as apostolic nuncio to Iran the papal liturgical director, an archbishop, a man who has been in the limelight, etc. The job he goes to now will be a dead-end, I imagine, and Benedict will have him close to keep an eye on him. But it also means that he'll be made a cardinal. At 64 years of age, he's not too young either. Anyway, he's just one guy.

Probably more significant is what happens with Cardinal Sepe. Sandro Magister was wondering about Sepe awhile back, well before the conclave, wondering just how powerful he was as head of Evangelization in the mission lands, or whatever is post is.

And then the incident when Sepe appeared, during a visit with Fidel Castro, in a white cassock. Too much for the media! It appeared that he had made himself pope; obviously, the media doesn't much quibble about the red piping on the white cassock: if it's a white cassock, it looks like the pope.

Thanks for linking, Iosephus!

I would agree that such a change for Marini would LOOK like a promotion, without actually being one -- exactly as it happened with Sorrentino. It goes to show, if it happens as the magazine predicts (it`s just speculation for now, naturally) just how gentle and considerate Benedict is to those with whom he disagrees.
